My favourite online magazine Inside Story thought it was going to close down a few months ago. I was very sad to hear it. Some of the magazine’s regular authors were asked to write a reflection on one of their pieces as a kind of farewell. I unhappily did so for the first piece I ever write for IS, “Why Does Truth Come Third?” —which regarded the position of truth (or history) in the Uluru Statement’s trio of aims (June 2021). BUT! Between writing that piece and it coming out the fortunes of IS turned around ! And they were able to proceed again—due to the deep generosity of some donors. The editor decided to go ahead with the series of reflections anyway, so here is my original piece, now with a 2026 update…
